Dazzling Dorm Diet: Welcome!

Welcome to the launch of discussing the realities of diet and fitness in college! My name is Jamie Lambert and I am so excited to share with you all some tips on balancing college life while maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Being a student in college are the best four years and with this comes so much freedom. Think about this: we go to class and after class we have so many hours to design the lifestyle we desire. This may be hanging with friends, taking a nap, playing a sport, and lots of eating. With all of this freedom, it leads us to make decisions on our own to maintain a healthy lifestyle. I know what it’s like to be surrounded by every food possible in the dining hall and feel the need to try it all. I have gained knowledge and some weight over the past 3 years which has now prompted me to make smarter food and exercise choices.

College is a challenging time for figuring out a routine because of all the food, downtime, social time, studying and stress. I am a major foodie and will be sharing that cheat days are okay as long as you get back to routine right after! I have learned that while being a college student what we put into our bodies matter but it is definitely all about keeping everything in moderation.

Some tips to look out for:

-Easy workouts that you can do anywhere in your room

-Healthy foods/snacks

-Easy and healthy options on Marshall Street

-Motivation

-Enjoying food because we’re only in college once!

It could be very difficult to maintain healthy habits in college particularly freshman year when you are forced to be on the meal plan. It’s a challenge to not fall into the trap of the freshman 15. I believe all college student know what they have to do to maintain a healthy lifestyle but it is very easy to get distracted and not make the best decisions. I have had personal experience with this and am always learning and trying to make smarter healthy choices.

Being a current junior and now having my own kitchen I have been able to take control of my food choices and I work hard on preparing healthy meals. Routine is a big part of the day and exercising everyday is super important. Having a certain timeslot to workout is so important. You have to think of it like a class in your schedule.

Before entering college most incoming students go in with the mindset of lets better not gain the freshman 15. Fast forward a few months later and maybe that plan didn’t work out exactly as you wanted. College to say the least is a busy time, trying to balance school work versus having a social life, it can get tricky. It is all about getting motivated and figuring out what motivates you. I can’t wait to share it all with you!

To say the least, we are only in college once after all and we have to enjoy ourselves.

Leave any comments below on any of your struggles with food or fitness are and also makes you feel your best!

Thank you so much!

I can relate to this on so many levels. When I first came to school as a freshman, my biggest fear was gaining the Freshman 15. I knew it was possible to maintain healthy choices and find time to exercise, but when it actually came down to it, I would usually just shrug it off. After winter break, I realized that I really needed to start making changes or I would go completely downhill. While the cake in the dining hall was so tempting after eating a greasy slice of pizza or two, I started opting for a piece of fruit instead. Slowly, I began to implement changes into my diet and saw real results. Fast-forward to my junior year…
