1. Discuss what Keret, the narrator, means when he says, “The writer is neither saint nor tzaddik nor prophet standing at the gate” (106).
Keret may be referring to the fact that the writer does not have any special power than the average person does. Writers write in the present. They write about their experiences from the way they interpret something. It is very important to always remember that when reading something, there could be a slight bias from the writers point of view. The writer is able to speak freely about the way they feel.
2. Choose one other sentence from anywhere in the story, and discuss how it relates to the theme(s) of the story as a whole.
The line that caight my eye was “at two in the morning, I got out of bed, went to the computer, and started to write” (107). This shows that there was a lot going on his mind and he couldn’t sleep until he had it all down on paper. I relate to this because sometimes if I have an idea and don’t want to lose it, I need it to be written down in that moment so I don’t lose it. He needed to clear his head by writing.
3. What does the narrator learn from the woman who reads aloud before him?
The writer was able to connect to the womans story. The narrator was able to take what the woman said and use it to think about his own thoughts. He also learned that success versus failure is a particularly hard subject to deceipher. Ultimately, he learns from the woman that there is always room to improve and success comes from improvements every time!
4. Reflect from a personal standpoint on the writing process, creativity, success, failure, or whatever else the story inspires you to discuss in a self-reflective manner.
Success versus failure has always been prevalent and will continue to be. I don’t necessarily agree with the nararators take on it because he relates to success and failture to other people having to recognizing it. I think it is important to have personal success and personal failures and even if other people don’t know about it, it’s okay. I really enjoy writing for myself and reflecting on what I have written. In terms of creativity it is really important to have your own creative spin on the writing. I truly feel that writing is a great way to express your thoughts and get them down.
